Within the scope of the thesis investigations for the development of a micro fuel cell system based on methanol with an electric power output of 30 W are performed. The small hybrid system is designed to supply a golf-caddy with electric power. The fuel cell system as such is based on the combination of a compact steam reformer for methanol and a High Temperature PEM fuel cell (HT-PEM). The entire system is made of hydroformed metal sheets which are assembled to a heat exchanger, which directs all relevant process media internally. The investigations are divided into three main fields. The first field contains the thermodynamic calculation and design of the relevant processes based on system simulations and the design of the thermally integrated fuel processor. The concept includes an interface to create a direct coupling between fuel cell and fuel processor. The second main field is the experimental verification of the fuel processor developed. Different catalysts and catalyst coatings are tested for their applicability in a fuel cell system. Within the scope of the testing programme points of operation for a coupled system of fuel processor and fuel cell are identified. The influence of the system parameters on the quality of the hydrogen-rich gas created in the reformer are discussed and evaluated. The third main field is devoted to investigations on fuel cells with metallic bipolar plates, which creates the necessity to consider corrosion stability. Long-time and cycle tests are performed to qualify materials and coatings for the micro fuel cell. The bipolar plate concept is verified experimentally using single cells and stack of 20 cells.
