Zusammenfassung: | Recently there have been numerous changes in the sphere of modern business operations. Globalisation, accompanied by rapid technological changes, has given rise to a completely new business environment. Recently, it has become essential to consider business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR). It is claimed that business ethics and CSR are of key importance in the existence of companies in numerous countries and regions. If a company wishes to be perceived as a reliable partner in business, it should implement elements of both concepts, or indeed these concepts themselves. This relates not only to global corporations (unless these concepts are especially important for transnational companies), but also to small and medium-size companies. In contrast, unethical behaviour or a lack of corporate social responsibility may damage a company’s reputation and make it less appealing to shareholders, leading to a fall in profits.
Taking into account the aforementioned circumstances, scholars from four Central European Universities from Visegrad Group have conducted a scientific project aimed at identifying the scale and scope of the use of Business Ethics and CSR in three sectors of the economy, more specifically the pharmaceutical, tobacco and alcohol industries. The research subjects included a group of 350 companies operating in the aforementioned sectors. Questionnaires were sent to companies which, under the Pareto rule, represent a minimum 80% (and in some sectors even 100 percent) of the production potential of the given sector. Among the respondents were companies from the alcohol industry (150 companies), the tobacco industry (100 companies) and the pharmaceutical industry (a further 100 companies). The intention of the project was to provide detailed information about ethical behavior and non-transparent practices among these industries in particular countries. The responses received allowed the researchers to evaluate the utilisation of CSR and Business Ethics amongst the companies analysed. Despite there being several limitations of the study (e.g. the relatively small number of responses received), our research has confirmed that companies from the sectors in question utilise Business Ethics and CSR concepts in their operations, although their scale is differentiated. |
