Local image-based and conventional integral entrainment analysis
Droplet entrainment constitutes a serious threat for separation efficiency and connected downstream equipment in distillation and absorption processes. Due to the complex nature of this phenomenon, engineers consider entrainment mostly by safety factors and heuristic approaches. The limited availability of measurement methods for analysis of entrained liquid constitutes a substantial reason for this course of action. This thesis establishes a new measurement method for analysis of entrained liquid in the form of an image-based system.

Constructed as a probe, the system enables detailed studies of the droplet regime above trays and packings. The acquired insights clarify the impact of operating parameters and inlay design on the extent of entrainment. These results are critically compared to conventional systems like the quantification of entrained liquid by capture trays, pressure drop measurements or froth height assessment. As the developed probe features a high flexibility at low construction and operating costs, an extrapolation model is developed in order to predict integral entrainment rates based on locally detected liquid volumes. This approach positions the image-based measurement technique as a potential alternative to conventional methods like capture trays, conductivity gauges or droplet impingement devices. Specifically, image data constitute a large-sized resource, which enables the extraction of innumerable information on the particle shape, size, velocity and directional movement. Thereby, the performance of the image-based measurement system is discussed separately with respect to measurement range in view of size and velocity. The insights presented in scope of this work, serve as an appeal for process technicians and chemical engineers to integrate image-based systems in their plant equipment.
