On Optimum Data Detection In Wireless Quantum Optical Communications
The continuously growing demand for wireless data transmission is pushing conventional radio-frequency communication systems toward their technological and physical limits. Wireless optical communication offers a promising alternative by providing access to enormous bandwidth resources at optical frequencies. Describing such communication systems within a quantum-mechanical framework opens new possibilities for the design and analysis of future wireless networks.

This dissertation investigates optimum data detection in wireless quantum optical communication systems. The transmitted electromagnetic field is described using quantum states, while quantum measurement theory provides the foundation for optimum detection at the receiver. Particular attention is given to the influence of thermal radiation, coherence and decoherence, and multipath propagation on the statistics of the received optical field.

To enable efficient detection in multipath environments, the communication channel is represented by a finite-state model and trellis-based detection techniques are developed and analyzed. Furthermore, reduced-state detection methods are introduced to substantially decrease computational complexity, latency, and energy consumption while maintaining performance close to that of optimum full-state detection.

The presented results demonstrate the potential of combining quantum-optical principles with advanced communication and detection techniques, providing a theoretical and algorithmic foundation for future high-capacity and energy-efficient wireless optical communication systems.
