Environmental Informatics – Stability, Continuity, Innovation

Current trends and future perspectives based on 30 years of history. Adjunct Proceedings of the EnviroInfo 2016 conference

This book covers selected keynotes, short papers and work in progress papers of the 30th edition of the long standing and established international and interdisciplinary conference series on leading environmental information and communication technologies (EnviroInfo 2016). The conference was held in September 14 - 16, 2016 at the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (HTW Berlin), University of Applied Sciences. Basic topics that were covered under the central focus "Environmental Informatics - Current trends and future perspectives based on 30 years of history" were applications of geographical information systems, environmental modelling and simulation, risk management, material and energy flow management, climate change, tools and database applications and other aspects with regard to the main topic ICT and the environment. Due to the interdisciplinary character of environmental informatics, one important goal of this conference was to bring experts from industry, research and education together to exchange ideas and proposals for solution of urgent problems and needs in the field on environmental protection and it´s IT-support. Three papers are separately analyzed for this database.

Green Function Technique For Water Waves

Integral Transforms, Integral Equations, Asymptotics

This monograph focuses on the application of Green´s functions for the solution of linear water wave problems. The general water wave problem is formulated in terms of the Laplace equation with (i) boundary conditions at the free surface, at the impermeable bottom and at body surfaces and (ii) radiation conditions at infinity. This general formulation is specified for a number of typical water wave phenomena: wave radiation-diffraction, ship wave propagation, sloshing in containers, wave-current interactions, wave propagation in two-layer fluid systems, and evolution of capillarygravity waves. Most of the analysis is dedicated to constructing representations for the Green´s functions to reduce the above water wave problems into integral equations and to obtain asymptotic representations. The minor weakness of the monograph-i.e. the fairly mathematical approach, which does not give much attention to the physical aspects of the phenomena at hand-is largely redeemed by the clarity of presentation and breadth of applications analyzed. In summary, this very complete compendium on the use of Green´s functions for linear water wave problems represents a useful support for students, practitioners and scientists who face the need of solving varied problems characterized by the evolution of linear water waves. Mathematische Modellierung in der Schiffstheorie

Geometrie, Mechanik, Hydrodynamik

The book deals with mathematical and mechanical aspects of ship theory. It contains an introduction, seven chapters dealing with geometry, mechanics, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, motion of a ship, one-dimensional motion of a ship, water waves as well as an appendix providing mathematical items and formulas. Here, a ship is defined as a rigid body exhibiting at least one plane of symmetry and generally a non-homogeneous mass distribution. In all chapters, the author provides the necessary formulas to take this specification into account, for instance, formulas for description of surfaces and for the moment of inertia. Examples for special geometries are c0nsidered. In doing so, the author follows a strong classification, at some places with little explanation. Therefore, the book has also the character of a formulary. The author has written his book for a broad audience: for engineers, lecturers, Ph.D. and other students. From the reviewer´s point of view, the book can be a useful supplement for people interested in ship theory. Unfortunately, the book does not contain a subject index. There is only a list of abbreviations. It would be desirable, if – at least at two or three places – the author had dealt more extensively with mathematical modeling, as is promised in the book´s title. This remark is meant in the sense that it would be useful just for (undergraduate) students to see in detail how the modeling starts from some assumptions (first principles like balance of impulse) and ends with a complete mathematical problem for determining the unknown quantities. In addition, at some places basic items are difficult to understand without further references, for instance hydro masses (Hydromassen). FinaIly, at some places, unfortunately, there are linguistic errors. (Michael Wolff)

Multivariate Statistik – drei Manuskripte

The first two parts of this book are in German, the third one is in English language. Part one is on matrix algebra and has 25 pages. Part two is on multivariate statistics, and Part three is almost identical to the preprint [\Exact multivariate tests { a new eective principle of controlled model choice“, Preprint, arXiv:1202.2045] by the author, M. Rosolowski and E. Glimm.

Easy Linear Optimization

This short book, divided in seven chapters, presents an introduction to linear optimization. The author begins with an overview of the mathematical notation and the principles of linear algebra and graph theory necessary in the study of linear optimization. This is followed by the denition of a liner program and a description of convex sets and Ane hulls. The fourth chapter considers the fundamental theory of duality and includes discussions about the Farkas lemma and complementary slackness. The author then moves on to present the polyhedral structure associated with linear programming and their properties, before studying in detail the Simplex algorithm and its performance. The book concludes with a short chapter on potential applications. Overall, the book is very dense in mathematics but at the same time able to eciently compact the theory of linear programming into a concise booklet.
