Porous titanium and titanium alloys, as a potential filtration material, can serve the chemical reaction with high degree of dispersion, because of their excellent physical and mechanical properties, in particularly the strong resistance to corrosion in various high- or low-temperature media. However, the cost of producing porous titanium and titanium alloys from primary metal to engineering components is so high that their applications are limited. In this thesis, a new simple powder metallurgy (PM) process by using TiH2 powders was used to manufacture porous Ti and TiAl alloy components as a promising low cost approach. The addition of TiH2 as a reactant has been found beneficial for the synthesis of porous Ti and TiAl alloys.
