Zusammenfassung: | With regard to efficiency and product quality, the objective of this study was to optimise fruit hulling, seed shelling and the mechanical co-extraction process for recovering oil and protein from Jatropha curcas L. (J. curcas) seeds. This book consists of three major sections.
In the first section, a prototype of a mechanical huller for hulling J. curcas fruits and isolating them from the hulls was constructed, evaluated and tested. With respect to physical properties of the fruits, computer simulations and modelling were applied, in order to predict the optimum conditions. Along with the prototype, a separation unit to separate the hulls from the seeds was also constructed and integrated with the huller. In the second section, the shelling process of J. curcas seeds using a modified disc mill was studied and optimised. Influence of physical and mechanical properties of the seeds on the shelling performance was investigated for different size classes. Characteristic air velocity curves of different fractions from the shelled material to separate them pneumatically were also reported. The shelling performance of sorted and unsorted seeds was compared and analysed, and the optimum setting for the mill was determined for each size class. In the third section, mechanical oil co-extraction of J. curcas kernels using rapeseed, soybean and corn as additives was investigated. With regard to oil recovery efficiency, press capacity and specific energy consumption, the extraction using a screw press was carried out and optimised. The quality of the oil and press cake was analysed and compared with German standard and J. curcas kernel meal from other literatures, respectively. |
